ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY SERIES.John Gee (veterinarian) John Gee, FRCVS (2 March 1907 – 18 March 1984) was a British veterinary surgeon, who, with colleagues at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (RD&E), won the first animals' rights for dogs at the Court of Appeal in 1948. The case concerned the prosecution of a man for cruelty towards his dog. The man was convicted, but the appeal court threw out the conviction. Early life Gee was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire on 2 March 1907. His father, John Gee, was a teacher. He gained a scholarship to attend Charterhouse School in Surrey. Career At age 14 Gee joined a stockbrokerage firm but left in 1926, returning to veterinary studies at the Royal Veterinary College, London. He graduated in 1931. He worked at the veterinary surgery in the West Country before establishing his own practice in Exeter in 1936. He also served as a Veterinary Inspector for the Ministry of Agriculture from 1936 to 1941, after which he was appointed honorary veterinary surgeon to Devon County Council. Gee was to have an interest in small animals for most of his life. He was also a keen golfer, spending his time between golf matches caddying for various golfers. Legal challenge In 1941, Gee heard from a former employee that an animal had been abandoned in a farm in Teignmouth, Devonshire. Gee visited the farm and found an injured four-week-old Pekinese dog left alone in a room that had been repossessed by the farmers. Gee treated the dog, but it died the following day. The landlord of the farm was convicted of neglect but appealed at Exeter Crown Court. Gee was to represent him on the appeal. At the appeal, Gee's defence was that the dog had been abandoned without food or water, so there was no case of cruelty. In 1944 the Court of Appeal
